I'd been writing poetry for twenty years. Then in October 2024, I went on a healing journey from Alaska to Florida by car, a ten-day journey that led me through the arctic wilderness, through the vast interior of the Yukon and the endless expanse of central Canada to a place I didn't really expect to find myself—the parish of Lakota medicine man Nicholas Black Elk, located on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
I walked through the front doors of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and was stopped in my tracks by a sign on the wall with these words from Black Elk: Your vision is not complete until you perform it. I don't know why, but I turned right around, walked back out of that church and drove away as fast as my car could carry me. I didn't stay for Mass as I had intended to, and I spoke to no one.
What happened after that, after the drive to Florida and the months on a sailboat listening to mgk & Juice WRLD & Chika & Tate McRae and the drive west through the desert to a remote camping spot outside of L.A. where I heard Lil Peep's mixtape Live Forever for the first time under a blue moon in a dark blue sky shining on an illuminated blue sand, after driving north through British Columbia on the edge of winter to find myself unexpectedly back in the place I began with music suddenly beginning to take shape in me—after this, and so much more, I find myself here now, with an album of songs. I'm still as afraid as the day I ran away from Black Elk's parish and the sign on the wall calling me to music. But I won't let that stop me.
